Doctoral Consortium

The Doctoral Consortium will run for a full day on the Tuesday (31 Jan) before the conference begins and again for half a day on Friday afternoon (3 Feb) after the conference concludes.

There will be quite a line-up to guide and support the DC participants. Some 10 internationally experienced scholars of high standing will participate in the DC; give personal feedback, lead discussions, and answer questions. The group of experts cover a range of disciplines, topical specialities, and methods expertise. It includes the keynote speakers Dean Shepherd and Patti Greene as well as the conference organisers Per Davidsson and John Watson. You will also get the chance to discuss with the experienced scholars who facilitate the DC in breaks and throughout the conference.

The first day will be devoted mainly to student presentations followed by feedback and group discussion of each student’s project. Participants will be invited to partake actively in – and will learn from the discussion of – not only their own projects but also in those of 10-15 other students.

The main activity for the second (half) will be expert-led group discussions of selected papers that were submitted to the conference, with an aim to prepare them for publication in a suitable journal. At least two experienced academics and two doctoral students will read over each selected paper prior to the session and will then provide author(s) with friendly, constructive feedback in a face to face discussion lasting at least 40 minutes per paper. As DC participant you will be asked to read and review two papers in advance. Through participation as reviewer and in the discussion together with highly experienced experts you will acquire “tacit knowledge” and “tricks of the trade” in a very hands-on manner. If you have a paper accepted for the main conference you can nominate it for selection into the paper development workshop.

Participants have two things to prepare in and deliver in advance:

  1. A 15 minute presentation of their research (plans/ideas). Please end the presentation by highlighting the questions/issues you believe most critical for facilitating your continued journey towards successful completion. Advance deliverable: Extended abstract of presentation (further instructions will be mailed out to participants).
  2. Written reviews of two papers submitted to the paper development workshop (further instructions will be mailed out to participants)

Please also note that participants are required to actively attend all sessions – not just those where their own research is being presented. This also includes ensuring that your travel plans allow participation from Tuesday morning through Friday afternoon.
